Sleep isn’t only essential for your wakefulness but also directly impacts your physical and mental health and wellness. Failure to get a sufficient amount and quality of sleep can result in various wellness issues. One major hindrance preventing meaningful sleep is a sleeping disorder.
If you find yourself physically tired every morning, you may have a sleeping issue, like sleep apnea. At Sleep Perfection, we work with you to evaluate potential sleep issues and recommend the most effective course of treatment for your long-term health and well-being.
It’s crucial to distinguish excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) from fatigue (insomnia-related daytime sleepiness). Both terms are typically used interchangeably, even by some researchers, but there are specific differences.
The major sign of EDS is drowsiness during the day. People with EDS are susceptible to falling asleep whenever they’re in a sedentary position or dull environment. For instance, it’s common for those who suffer from EDS to fall asleep while sitting in a waiting room. There are even those who have EDS who’ll fall asleep in traffic.
EDS is often due to the following conditions:
Having daytime fatigue means you’re exhausted during the day but find it difficult to sleep. As a result, you’ll struggle to accomplish your daily tasks. If you have a sleeping issue, like insomnia or sleep apnea, fatigue is a more accurate description of daytime exhaustion.
Some common symptoms of daytime fatigue are:
Sleep disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), affect around 50-70 million U.S. adults, while 20% of children snore (1-2% of which have OSA). Unfortunately, snoring, which is a major symptom of OSA, is so common that people think it is normal. Failure to feel fully rested every morning, waking up several times throughout the night, feeling irritable and wanting to take a daily nap are other indicators of fatigue due to a sleeping condition.
When left untreated, fatigue can affect your overall wellness, making you susceptible to the following conditions:
Want to know if your daytime exhaustion is due to a sleeping condition? Take our sleep quiz using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.
The first step toward meaningful sleep is through a sleep disorder evaluation. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is a tool used by most sleep experts to assess drowsiness. This tool allows experts to evaluate if your sleepiness points to a sleeping disorder. If you get a high score on the Epworth Scale, you likely have a sleep condition.
A score of 16 or greater means you should seek a professional, as it indicates a high risk of a sleep disorder and excessive sleepiness.
Oral Appliance Therapy is a scientifically justified treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine declared a statement in 2006 that Oral Appliance Therapy was approved as the first line of defense to address mild to severe cases of OSA. Until today, Oral Appliance Therapy is still a highly effective form of treatment.
Dr. Pandhi and his team of sleep experts at Sleep Perfection create dental appliances, or oral Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD), for patients with mild to moderate OSA. This device will prevent the tongue from blocking the throat and/or advancing the lower jaw forward. With an oral appliance, patients suffering from OSA can keep their airway open while they sleep.
Oral appliances require the approval of a sleep specialist and dentist adept in oral appliances, such as Dr. Pandhi.
If Dr. Pandhi determines that an oral device is the best option for you, he’ll make an impression of your teeth. This means he’ll customize the device specifically for you to ensure a comfortable fit in your mouth.
Dr. Pandhi will also give you a morning repositioner to realign your bite after removing the oral device. You’re also given detailed instructions on how to use and clean your custom-made oral appliance. You may need to participate in another sleep study to determine if the device is working for you.
At Sleep Perfection, Dr. Pandhi and our team focus on treating the root cause of a sleeping problem, not just the symptoms. Learn more about our sleep evaluation process, treatment options and next steps by contacting our office today.
